What to Do Before and After Kybella Appointment
What To Do Before Your Kybella Appointment
48 Hours Before Treatment
- Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®), naproxen (Aleve®), fish oil, vitamin E, and certain herbal supplements (garlic, ginkgo, ginseng) to reduce the risk of bruising. If prescribed, consult with your doctor before discontinuing use.
- Limit alcohol and caffeine, as both can increase swelling and bruising.
- Stay hydrated and eat a well-balanced diet to support recovery.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning beds, as sunburned or irritated skin may increase sensitivity.
- Reduce salt intake to help minimize swelling post-treatment.
- Discontinue retinoids, acids, and exfoliating products that may increase skin sensitivity.
Day of Treatment
- Arrive with clean skin—no makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or skincare products on the treatment area.
- Wear comfortable clothing with a loose neckline to avoid irritation.
- Eat a light meal before your appointment to avoid feeling lightheaded.
- Plan for downtime, as swelling and tenderness are common post-treatment.
Medical Considerations
- Notify us of any changes to your health, including a new diagnosis, pregnancy, or new medications. Some conditions and medications may not be compatible with Kybella, and adjustments to your treatment plan may be necessary.
- If you have a history of difficulty swallowing, bleeding disorders, or recent cosmetic treatments in the area, inform your provider before your session.
- If you are prone to cold sores (HSV-1 or HSV-2) and the treatment area is close to your lips, taking an antiviral medication 24-48 hours prior is recommended.
What To Do After Your Kybella Appointment
First 24 Hours
- Apply cold compresses intermittently to reduce swelling and discomfort. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
- Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treated area to allow the product to settle properly.
- Refrain from strenuous activities that may increase swelling, such as heavy exercise.
- Sleep with your head elevated to help minimize swelling.
First 48-72 Hours
- Swelling, tenderness, and redness are normal and may increase before improving. This is a sign the treatment is working.
- Avoid heat exposure, including saunas, steam rooms, and prolonged sun exposure.
- Stay well-hydrated and reduce salt intake to help manage swelling.
- If needed, take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for mild discomfort. Avoid NSAIDs like ibuprofen or aspirin, as they can increase bruising.
First Two Weeks
- Swelling and firmness in the area may persist as the fat breakdown process continues.
- Avoid facial massages, facials, or aggressive skincare treatments in the treated area.
- Bruising may take up to a week to fade. If needed, Arnica gel can help speed up recovery.
- Numbness and lumpiness in the treated area are normal and will gradually resolve.
What to Expect Over Time
- Weeks 3-4: Swelling subsides, and the area begins to feel firmer as the body removes fat cells.
- Weeks 4-6: Visible fat reduction becomes more noticeable.
-
Multiple treatments may be needed for optimal results, with sessions spaced at least one month apart.
