What to Do Before and After Microneedling Appointment

What to Do Before Your Microneedling Appointment

One Week Before Treatment

  • Discontinue active skincare ingredients, including retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, vitamin C, and other exfoliating acids. These can increase skin sensitivity.
  • Stop using hair removal methods such as waxing, threading, tweezing, or depilatory creams in the treatment area.
  • Avoid facial treatments, such as peels, lasers, or other resurfacing procedures.
  • If prone to cold sores, take an antiviral medication 24-48 hours before treatment to prevent an outbreak.

48 Hours Before Treatment

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can contribute to dehydration and increase skin sensitivity.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your skin well-hydrated before your session.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning beds to prevent sunburn or irritation before treatment.

Day of Treatment

  • Arrive with clean skin—do not wear makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or skincare products.
  • Avoid shaving the treatment area on the same day, as this may cause irritation.
  • Eat a light meal before your appointment to avoid feeling lightheaded.
  • Notify your provider of any new medications or health changes, including pregnancy or recent infections.

By following these guidelines, you’ll ensure that your skin is properly prepared and that you achieve the best possible results from your microneedling treatment. If you have any questions, contact Azure Dream MedSpa before your appointment.

What to Do After Your Microneedling Appointment

First 24 Hours

  • Avoid touching your face to prevent introducing bacteria to the treated area.
  • Keep the skin clean and free from makeup, sunscreen, and skincare products except for those recommended by your provider.
  • Use only lukewarm water to cleanse the skin and gently pat dry with a clean towel. Avoid harsh rubbing.
  • Expect mild redness, sensitivity, and tightness similar to a mild sunburn. This is normal and should subside within 24-48 hours.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and heat, including saunas, hot showers, and vigorous exercise.

First 24 Hours

  • Continue using a gentle, hydrating cleanser without active ingredients.
  • Apply a soothing moisturizer as directed to help with healing and reduce dryness.
  • Do not use makeup, retinol, acids, or exfoliants. Your skin is highly sensitive and needs time to recover.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and support healing.

First Week

  • Use sunscreen daily (SPF 30 or higher with physical blockers like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide). Your skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and wear a hat when outdoors.
  • Do not pick, scrub, or exfoliate peeling skin to prevent irritation and scarring.
  • Continue avoiding harsh skincare products, including acids, vitamin C, and retinoids, until your provider advises resuming them.

What to Expect Over Time

  • Days 3-5: Mild dryness and flaking may occur as new skin cells emerge. This is a natural part of the healing process.
  • Week 1: Skin will appear brighter, smoother, and more even in tone.
  • Weeks 2-4: Collagen production increases, and results continue to improve.
  • Multiple treatments may be needed for optimal results, depending on your skin concerns.

If you experience prolonged redness, irritation, or signs of infection, contact Azure Dream MedSpa for further guidance. Proper aftercare will enhance your results and ensure a smooth recovery.
