What to Do Before and After PRP/PRF Appointment

What To Do Before Your PRF/PRP Appointment

One Week Before Treatment

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements, including aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®), naproxen (Aleve®), fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, garlic, and ginger, as these can increase bruising and prolong healing. If you are on prescribed blood thinners, consult with your doctor before discontinuing them.
  • Stop using active skincare products, such as retinoids (Retin-A®, Tretinoin), alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), vitamin C serums, and benzoyl peroxide, as these may increase skin sensitivity.
  • Limit sun exposure and avoid tanning beds to prevent sunburn and irritation before your appointment. Always use SPF 30+ sunscreen.
  • Hydrate well by drinking plenty of water daily, as this helps improve the quality of the PRF/PRP.
  • If prone to cold sores, take an antiviral medication (such as Valtrex®) 24-48 hours before your treatment to reduce the risk of an outbreak

48 Hours Before Treatment

  • Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake, as both can dehydrate the body and contribute to bruising.
  • Eat a nutrient-rich diet, focusing on leafy greens and protein to support healthy blood circulation.
  • Avoid excessive salt intake, which may contribute to swelling post-treatment.
  • Refrain from waxing, threading, tweezing, or using hair removal creams in the treatment area to avoid irritation.

Day of Treatment

  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking at least 16-24 ounces of water before your appointment. Hydration is crucial for the best quality PRF/PRP.
  • Eat a light, protein-rich meal before your session to prevent dizziness or lightheadedness.
  • Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or any skincare products.
  • Wear comfortable clothing, especially if PRF/PRP will be drawn from your arm.
  • Avoid intense exercise before your appointment, as increased circulation can contribute to post-treatment swelling.
  • Inform your provider of any new health conditions, medications, or recent infections, as these may affect your treatment eligibility.

What To Do After PRP/PRF Appointment

First 24 Hours

  • Avoid washing or touching the treated area to allow the PRF/PRP to absorb fully into the skin.
  • Do not apply skincare products, including cleansers, moisturizers, and makeup. If necessary, makeup may be applied after 24 hours.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure, high heat, and sweating, including blow dryers, hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise.
  • Refrain from taking blood thinners such as aspirin and NSAIDs for several days. Tylenol® (acetaminophen) may be used for discomfort.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours to reduce bruising risk.

First 48-72 Hours

  • Use only gentle skincare products and avoid exfoliants, retinoids, acids (AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C), and active ingredients until cleared by your provider.
  • Continue avoiding excessive sun exposure and apply SPF 30+ sunscreen daily.
  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated to reduce swelling and avoid disturbing the treated area.
  • Avoid rubbing, scrubbing, or massaging the treatment area for at least two weeks.

First Two Weeks

  • No facials, facial massages, or laser treatments for two weeks after PRF/PRP injections. Treatments such as Botox® may be performed immediately before or after, but consult your provider for recommendations.
  • If you received a PRF facial (topical application), do not wash your skin for at least 5 hours. Also, avoid direct heat, sweating, and activities that get the skin wet.
  • For best results, a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart is recommended.

Long-Term Maintenance and Follow-Up

  • Results typically appear within 2-4 weeks, with continued improvement for up to 12 weeks.
  • If the desired results are not achieved, follow-up treatments may be recommended at 4-12 week intervals until the desired outcome is reached.
  • For long-term maintenance, treatments every 6-12 months may help prolong the results.
  • PRF/PRP therapy works best in combination with other treatments such as Botox®, fillers, or laser therapy to enhance anti-aging benefits.

What to Expect After Treatment

  • Temporary side effects may include redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness, tingling, numbness, lumpiness, or a feeling of pressure at the injection sites. These effects typically subside within a few days.
  • Cold gel packs or ice may be gently applied immediately after treatment to reduce swelling, but do not apply ice directly to the skin.
