What to Do Before and After Subcision Appointment
What To Do Before Your Subcision Appointment
One Week Before Treatment
- Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements, including aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®), naproxen (Aleve®), fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, garlic, and ginger, as they can increase the risk of excessive bruising and prolonged healing.
- Discontinue active skincare products, such as retinoids (Retin-A®, Tretinoin), alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), vitamin C serums, chemical exfoliants, and benzoyl peroxide, as they may increase skin sensitivity and irritation post-treatment.
- Limit sun exposure and avoid tanning beds, as sunburned or irritated skin can increase discomfort and slow healing. Always wear SPF 30+ sunscreen.
- Stay well-hydrated and maintain a healthy diet to support the skin’s healing process.
- If you are prone to cold sores, take an antiviral medication (such as Valtrex®) 24-48 hours before treatment to prevent an outbreak in the treated area.
48 Hours Before Treatment
- Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake, as they can dehydrate the skin and increase bruising potential.
- Avoid excessive salt intake, which can contribute to post-treatment swelling.
- Refrain from waxing, threading, tweezing, or using hair removal creams in the treatment area to avoid unnecessary irritation.
- If prescribed an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory medication, begin taking it as directed by your provider.
Day of Treatment
- Arrive with clean skin, free from makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or any skincare products.
- Wear comfortable clothing if treating areas beyond the face to prevent friction on the treated area post-procedure.
- Eat a light meal before your appointment to prevent dizziness or lightheadedness.
- Inform your provider of any new health conditions or medications, including pregnancy, infections, or recent surgeries, as these may impact your treatment eligibility.
- Avoid shaving the treatment area on the day of your procedure to prevent irritation.
What To Do After Your Subcision Appointment
First 24 Hours
- Apply ice and gentle pressure to the treated area throughout the first day to reduce swelling and discomfort. Ice application should be done for 10 minutes at a time, 3-5 times within the first 24 hours.
- You may shower immediately and resume normal daily activities.
- If a scab forms, do not pick at it. Allowing the scab to fall off naturally will improve wound healing and minimize scarring.
- Most patients experience minimal pain. If needed, take Tylenol® (acetaminophen) for discomfort and continue using ice as directed.
- Avoid direct sun exposure, and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) daily to protect the healing skin.
First Week
- Keep the treated area clean and avoid applying makeup, harsh skincare products, or exfoliants.
- Refrain from excessive sun exposure, heat, and tanning beds, as UV exposure can interfere with the healing process.
- Avoid vigorous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating to prevent irritation.
- Continue applying sunscreen daily to protect the treated area and maintain long-term skin health
